We are working on interesting words. We call them juicy words. In our CAFE menu we learned to use prior knowledge, going back and rereading to make sure the story makes sense and using the words in the story to confirm our predictions.

In writing we have something called writing buddies. The writing buddies are our partners who we share our writing with and we work with them to help us be better writers.

Every day we do something called the number of the day. It is mostly double digit numbers. We have to think of ways to make that number with addition, subtraction and multiplication and we write it in our math journal. We learned a new game called Two Dice. You play it with one dice and a number chart in your journal. First you make the number chart. Then you roll the dice and add the numbers together. If you ge the number on the number chart you can cross it off.

Fun with Reading, Writing and Math

Dear Parents and Kids,
Mrs. Harmon's class is really fun!

We are working hard on getting lost in our books and becoming voracious readers. We have something called reading cafe. and the daily five.  It shows us  rules about becoming a better reader. We are working on expanding vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and accuracy.  We practice reading to get better at these things. This week we talked about juicy words. Juicy words are interesting words like delicious and phenomenon. When we are reading we are looking for juicy words words. This helps us to learn different words and new things about the words. We read the book, The Baby Sister by Tomie dePaola. It is a real life story about the author who wants a baby sister. Mrs. Harmon has started reading groups.

In writing we worked on using juicy words in our writing. We have been writing personal narratives. They are books about us.  We learned that good writers think of people, places and things that matter to them and then zoom in to small moments to write about.

During math we are working on math buckets and strategy games. We are also learning about making graphs. We have taken 3rd grade and 2nd grade assessment tests.  Today we learned how to make a double bar graph!

Don't forget about the school carnival. There will be games, cakes and things for parents and kids.

Hope you have a good weekend!

First Week of School By Emily and Zach

The first week of school we started learning about expectations for the class. We all participated in making our list.
They are:
RESPECT
Body Under Control
Voice is Appropriate for Learning
Polite
Treat Others the Way You Want to be Treated

RESPONSIBILITY
Put Things Where They Belong
Take Care of Your Stuff
Do your BEST
Have FUN!
We also wrote our dreams on a poster board and made a team called Team Work Makes the Dream Work. o

What we have been doing in math is Poison. You have 13 pieces and the person who ever has to take the last piece loses. Pig is another game we played. Pig is where you have 2 dice and you try to get to l00 who ever gets there first wins. Addition tests in different groups. If you can please ask your child to describe the 9 Holes game. It is another game we played.

What we've been doing in reading this past week is Read TO Self. We also have read an awesome book called Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco. It is a book about a girl who has confidence that she'll learn how to read. But it doesn't happen very quickly. She tries and tries but she just gets laughed at. We learned the theme of this story is that there are important people in your life who shape your life. So in writing we have made a class book about how someone has shaped your life. And we wrote a letter to someone that changed your life and is special to you.

This is our class blog and have a good weekend!
